In reference to Proclamation No. 929 signed by the President dated March 16, 2020 which provided Local Government Units (LGUs) enough leeway to tap appropriate funds to contain the spread of COVID-19, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator USec. Ernesto G. Carolina (Ret) sought the assistance of several LGUS to help provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to their respective local veterans.
As COVID-19 continues to be a threat to Filipinos nationwide, our veterans whose ages are ranging from 60 years old and above continue to be susceptible to the dreaded disease due to their old age. As such, USec. Carolina believes that the provision of PPEs such as alcohol, facial mask, and sanitizers will help protect them from the infectious virus which has now claimed a number of Filipino veterans.
Among the LGUs that readily responded to PVAO’s request are the LGUs of Baguio, Bayombong, Dagupan, and Narvacan. Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong provided 300 facial masks, 100 boxes of vitamins (calcium), and one liter of alcohol for distribution to veterans once the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) is lifted. Dagupan City Mayor Marc Brian C. Lim disseminated 220 sets of PPES containing one bottle of ascorbic acid, five pieces of cloth mask, and one bottle of 500ml isopropyl alcohol. Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson headed the distribution of hygiene kits in every household in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, 113 of which were for veterans. Meanwhile, in Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, 23 pensioners received PPEs together with food packs.
The LGU of Lingayen has also expressed to provide assistance to its local veterans. As of writing, there are still assistance in kind coming from LGUs which will be acknowledged later.
USec. Carolina conveyed his utmost gratitude to the LGUs for quickly assisting and providing medical needs to the veterans in this difficult time. The donated PPEs, vitamins, and food packs would be helpful for the veterans as they get through this pandemic.
This initiative is one of PVAO’s actions to bring assistance to our veterans especially those in the far flung areas. The support from the LGUs is a big boost to the assistance provided by the Veterans Federation of the Philippines and some private donors. It is during trying times like this that we have to defend those who defended us during the most trying times in the past
