The Negros Island Victory Day marks the surrender of an estimated 13, 500 Japanese soldiers under Japanese General Takaise Kono at Sta. Rosa, Murcia, Negros Occidental.

The surrender was preceded by the Battle of Patag, said to be the last battle of World War II in the Pacific. The battle which lasted for over four months began with the Landing in Negros on March 29, 1945 and the capture of Knob Hill on May 24. With continuous setbacks, the Japanese Forces begun to move inland to the mountains of Northern Negros to make their last stand against the Allied Forces. For more than three months, the battle between the Japanese and the Filipino guerillas at Mt. Silay lasted until the enemies finally showed signs of defeat.

Unaware of the announcement of the Japanese surrender on 15 August 1945, the forces of General Kono continued their defense in Negros for a few more days before parachuted messages were dropped in the vicinity of General Kono’s headquarters. After several more days of conferences and radio messages between Japanese Envoy Lt. Col. Watanabe and the 503rd RCT Commanding Officer Lt. Col Lawrie, arrangements for the formal surrender of the Kono forces were finally made. General Kono was among the first to surrender and was quickly followed by waves of surrendering Japanese Forces. By September 09, 1945, the entirety of the Japanese Imperial Forces in Negros had surrendered and the island was declared liberated from enemy occupation.
