During the liberation campaign in Luzon by the Allied Forces, Tuguegarao was under the control of the elements of the 103′” Division of the Japanese Forces. Filled with airfields used by the Japanese Naval Air Service, Tuguegarao was a strategic location which needed additional defense.
The liberation of Tuguegarao is a joint effort between the Filipino guerrillas of the 14°’ and 11″ Infantry of the United States Army Forces in the Philippines – Northern Luzon and the 37°’ Division of the U.S. Sixth Army. As early as 20 June 1945, Allied Forces from the 3′” Bn of the 11°’ Infantry, USAFIP-NL, under the command of LtCol. Donald D. Blackburn started attacking the enemy forces in Tuguegarao. To secure victory in Tuguegarao, the 14′ Infantry’s “C” and “0” Companies reinforced the 11°’ Infantry while the US 5′ Air Force provided support through aerial bombardments.
By 23 June, the 129′ RCT, 37°’ Division entered the town of Tuguegarao unopposed as the area was mostly cleared of Japanese presence by the Filipino guerrillas as well as the heavy artillery bombings by the American troops. Two days later, on the 25″ of June 1945, the town of Tuguegarao was finally retaken from enemy control. The capture of Tuguegarao was crucial in encircling the Shobu Force, which was concentrated in the highlands of Cordillera.
