Legaspi, Albay, specifically the Legaspi Port, was extremely useful in the Allied Forces’ goal of securing the Visayan passages. Found in the south easternmost tip of Luzon, Legaspi not only offers the best landing beaches and port facilities in the region, but also provides easy access to routes leading towards Sorsogon and the rest of the region. Capturing the area meant being able to block Japanese movements into the Sorsogon Peninsula where the they could try to control the San Bernardino Strait.

On April 1, 1945, the Task Group 78 led by Captain Homer F. McGee of the 158th Regimental Combat Team of the U.S. Army successfully landed on the beach of Legaspi  despite the presence of about 1,500-strong Fuji Force of the Japanese Army securing the area and the 35th Naval Guard Unit defending the garrison in Legaspi. In order to secure the landing, the Fifth Air Force staged aerial bombardment which started on March 23. The success of the landing in Legaspi was also due to the contributions of the Filipino guerrillas led by Lt. Col. Demetrio Camua whose support in securing the town against Japanese presence proved valuable in this liberation campaign.
