Paggunita sa Capas

The Paggunita sa Capas is a day of remembrance for our freedom-fighters who experienced the horrendous Death March and became prisoners-of-war (POW) at Camp O’Donnell, Capas, Tarlac – one of the Japanese concentration camps that turned into an internment ground for about 20,000 Filipino and 1,600 American soldiers who died due to sickness, deprivation, and enemy brutality during the war.

Now known as the Capas National Shrine, it boasts of an Obelisk with a towering height of 70 meters, standing as the focal center of the shrine, which symbolizes peace. The needle-like tower consists of three sections, which represent the Filipino, American and Japanese people in this modern age of global peace who have learned the lessons of war.

Unlike the customary festivities and entertaining performances of youth groups from various schools from Capas and nearby towns, this year’s event will solely focus on the symbolic wreath-laying before the three-prong obelisk. It will be shown virtually via Facebook Live.
