Liberation of Atok, Benguet

As soon as the Allied Liberation Forces landed in Lingayen to initiate the campaign to liberate the Philippines, the Igorot Warriors of the 66th Infantry, United States Armed Forces in the Philippines – Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL) maintained a strong offensive against the Japanese Occupation Forces.  With their skill and knowledge of the terrain, the 66th Infantry easily defeated the opposing forces who were stationed in the mountains of Benguet. The 3rd Battalion of the 66th Infantry did not relent in their advance and continued to pursue the retreating Japanese forces who were fleeing to different parts of Benguet. Making their final stand, the guerrillas engaged the retreating Japanese forces who were on their way to Kiangan.

The guerrillas continued their engagement on the retreating Japanese forces until finally, on August 4, 1945, nine days prior to the liberation of the capital, La Trinidad, the guerrillas were able to successfully eliminate the forces in Atok, liberating the municipality. Atok was a site of numerous battles, one of which is now the tourist destination known as the Guerrilla Saddle found in Caliking, Atok.
