Benguet Veterans Memorial Day
Every last Monday of May, the province of Benguet commemorates its own Veterans Memorial Day. This commemoration honors the brave soldiers and guerrilla fighters of Benguet who fought in the Second World War. During the commemoration, the people of Benguet also celebrate the gallantry the fighters displayed against the Japanese occupation forces.
Most of these fighters fought under the 66th Infantry Regiment of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines – Northern Luzon. The unit was known for its ferocity in dealing with the Japanese Forces as the Japanese could do little to stop the guerrillas’ combat operations against them. Thanks to the efforts of the Benguet fighters, the different municipalities of Benguet such as Kapangan, Sablan, Tuba, Kibungan and Tublay were freed from Japanese control. The Benguet fighters were also tasked to free the family of then President Sergio Osmeña from Japanese surveillance and pressure. They were so effective that the 66th Infantry Regiment annihilated a great number of enemy troops even before the arrival of the United States Sixth Army that was tasked with the liberation of the province.
