80th Araw ng Kagitingan
April 9, 2022 ◦ 8:00 a.m. Mount Samat National Shrine, Pilar, Bataan
The President of the Republic of the Philippines traditionally leads the commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan — the highlight among the series of commemorative events during the Philippine Veterans Week. Being a national observance, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) spearheads the event, with various regional or provincial government units simultaneously replicating the ceremony.
After more than two years of hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, Mt. Samat, Pilar, Bataan will once again house a select number of people of all ages, professions, and nationalities for the annual commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) at the Dambana ng Kagitingan or the Shrine of Valor.
The Dambana ng Kagitingan or the Shrine of Valor proudly stands atop Mt. Samat to memorialize the gallantry and epitomize the heroic stand of the Filipino and American forces who fought relentlessly from January to April 1942 at the Bataan Peninsula. This altar of heroism in the country is erected to remind us, and those who will come after, of the supreme sacrifice that was made in order for us to live in peace. But more importantly, both the national shrine and the event itself attest to the unbreakable spirit of our forebears, that despite facing a harrowing episode of our history, the enduring spirit of Kagitangan shone even brighter during such dark times.
